Yesterday’s Programming
“My brain forgot I’d changed my life.”
Ever had one of those moments?
I woke up this morning in a panic…. I glanced at the clock and it was after 7am and my heart sank.
“I’m late for work!”
Then, almost instantly, I remembered… it’s Saturday…. and I haven’t worked for anyone else for almost a year!
I smiled to myself, but it also stopped me in my tracks. It wasn’t really about forgetting what day it was, it was about something much deeper.
You see for years, my mornings followed the same routine…. the alarm, responsibility…. then rush…. don’t be late.
Even though my life has completely changed, for that brief moment my subconscious was still running an old programme. And it made me wonder how often we all do exactly the same thing… how many of us are living today’s life with yesterday’s programming?
Perhaps you’ve convinced yourself you’re not confident…when your mind is still protecting the younger version of you who was criticised.
Or perhaps you avoid opportunities…because somewhere along the way your brain learnt that staying small felt safer.
Or maybe you wake with that familiar feeling of anxiety without really knowing why.
Our subconscious is remarkable. It isn’t trying to hold us back, it’s actually trying to protect us using information that may have been helpful years ago but simply doesn’t fit the person we’ve become.
And that’s why I love the work I do because it’s not about ‘fixing’ people. It’s about helping them understand the beliefs, experiences and patterns that are quietly influencing their lives today, so they can finally move forward with confidence instead of being held back by yesterday.
So here’s a question for you…
What old programme might your mind still be running?
Because once you recognise it… you can begin to write a new one.
Oh, and before I go… 😊
This week’s story reminded me of a book that has stayed with me : Mindset by Carol Dweck.
One of the ideas she explores is that our beliefs about ourselves aren’t fixed. They can change and when they do, the way we approach challenges, setbacks and opportunities changes too.
If reading isn’t your thing, then I’d recommend Ethan Kross’s TED Talk, Do You Talk to Yourself? Here’s How to Harness Your Inner Voice.
It explores something I see every day in my work: the conversations we have with ourselves can quietly shape our confidence, our decisions and even the opportunities we take. The good news is that those conversations can change. I hope it inspires you as much as it inspired me.
