Something I noticed…

By Shirley D Palmer

Something happened this week that reminded me how easy it is to slip back into old thinking patterns.

You see, I found myself doing something that felt quite stretching. The sort of thing that takes you outside your comfort zone and leaves you wondering whether you’re really up to it.

And for a brief moment, an older version of me appeared.

The shy girl who worried about getting things wrong. The one who didn’t want to stand out. The one who worried what people might think. The one who doubted herself before she’d even begun.

What’s interesting is that years ago, I would have believed those thoughts. I would have taken them as evidence that I wasn’t ready, wasn’t capable, or should play it safe.

This time was different.

I noticed them.

I listened.

And then I carried on anyway.

It reminded me that confidence isn’t the absence of doubt. It’s recognising those old voices for what they are: old voices. Thoughts that once served a purpose but no longer get to decide what happens next.

I think many of us carry around younger versions of ourselves. The child who felt overlooked. The teenager who felt awkward. The adult who had their confidence knocked by life, relationships, loss or disappointment.

Sometimes those parts still whisper in our ear when we’re about to do something important.

The difference is that we don’t have to hand them the steering wheel.

So I’d love you to think about this today…

When was the last time an old version of you showed up?

And what might be possible if you thanked them for trying to protect you… and took the next step anyway?
